Raum auf Zeit
textile structures for immaterial space production
BA. Graduation Project
2021„Raum auf Zeit“ is a BA. graduation project exploring dynamic architectural constructions and their effects on users and the environment by using one of the oldest but often forgotten architectural materials.
The result is a (temporary) installation at the intersection of design, architecture and art: an interactive textile roof made of dependent elements that transform the space through evolving and changing patterns of light and shadow on the ground.
The installation captures various natural influences and has the potential to bring users in contact not only with each other, but also with their surroundings. Geometric patterns of light and shadow continuously redefine space without creating material boundaries and allow for an extended use of otherwise neglected outdoor spaces, as well
as a deepened perception of time.
Depending on weather conditions, the elements can be open or closed, resulting in a roof that protects against rain and heat, or a dynamic surface in which users can choose their own place of residence.
The manual mechanism provoking the installations movement was successfully tested in a 1:1 scale model and exhibited at CityLeaks Festival Cologne.
