The new column: on permanence and transience
2021
This research at INSIDE, KABK explores the architectural element of the column. Being usually placed in threshold places such as entrances or hallways, the project questions wether these spaces can shift into places of invitation and slowness, places to stay.
The new column base takes on the shape of the human body, specifically the spine. By taking imprints of the spine in different postures and transferring them onto the base design, the new column offers support and comfort in a variety of positions. It freezes moments in time, 'body-memory' and brings user and structural element closer together.
The new column invites passer-bys to break pregiven habits on how to use certain spaces. Instead of rushing through, they are invited to use the surrounding ground to sit and slow down.
