Room in room

Konstfack, Stockholm
2020
Room in room is a spatial design proposal developed in collaboration with Ronald McDonald Hus and Konstfack, Stockholm. Located next to the hospital, Ronald McDonald hus offers a place to stay for families with children all ages suffering from cancer and other hardly curable deseases.

Room in room is a proposal for an additional room, offering children of all ages a place to get distracted for a while. A place for everyone: ranging from closed off spatial Islands to an open area which seamlessly connects with the surrounding nature.

With focus on tactile interventions, 'room in room' triggers the senses and allows for interaction with the space within day to day activities.

Open and closed off areas, different ceiling heights and a variety of materials in flooring and furnishing allow for a calm yet rich experience within limited space. Rather than offering medical support, the room focusses on the childrens mental wellbeing. It offers a break from being hospitalized and invites to simply drift for a while.

The main piece is a movable wall that allows for interaction with the space – and each other – even before you enter. Holes in certain areas allow to discover parts of the room from the outside – and the other way around.

This way, users feel safe when entering and exiting the room – they know what to expect. Once inside, you can form stairs and shelves, create shapes with your body, climb on the wooden sticks or interact with someone standing outside and leave a trace when leaving again.
